Dana Leslie

I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Dundee. My art practice encompasses performance, photography, moving-image, installation, print-making and hand-made publications. Gathering data, conducting research and collecting documentation are crucial steps for me when starting a project. I enjoy creating works that explore feminist issues, the media and media-representation, beauty standards, the patriarchy, consumerism, the digital age and celebrity culture.

Through my artwork I aim to intertwine the personal and the impersonal and eradicate the distance we put between ourselves and the stories we read. Subject matter is the prerequisite for my choice of materials. I use a mix of photography and mass-produced, easily accessible materials but subvert expectations by printing by hand where possible, often playing with the physical versus the digital.

I also undertake long, durational performances and use myself within my work when necessary. I aim to switch the role of the passive viewer to active participant by including them in the narrative, blurring the line between the visual and the interactive, further developing the themes of communication, awareness and accountability.
